Alexander J. Stratigos

Alexander J. Stratigos, MD is Professor of Dermatology-Dermatology at the Department of Dermatology-Venereology, University of Athens Medical School, Andreas Sygros Hospital (Athens, Greece). He earned his medical degree from the University of Athens and completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Dermatology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (Boston, United States) before returning as faculty at the University of Athens School of Medicine. He directs the Dermato-Oncology Center and Melanoma Unit at A. Sygros Hospital and has led as local PI several multicenter clinical trials on biologic agents in psoriasis and hedgehog inhibitors and checkpoint inhibitors in non-melanoma skin cancer. His clinical interests include melanoma and skin cancer, psoriasis, and cutaneous photosensitivity. He also directs the Molecular Biology Laboratory at A. Sygros Hospital with a primary focus on the genetics of melanoma and skin cancer and with on-going collaborations with the NCI/USA (Melanostrum Consortium), MGH/Broad Institute, BioGenomel Consortium and the Harvard School of Public Health. His research work has been funded by the Aristeia Program, the Synergasia Program and the NCI. Dr. Stratigos serves at the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the SkinMed Journal: Dermatology for the Clinician and the Journal of the Hellenic Society of Dermatology-Venerology. He is the author of over 200 publications in international peer-reviewed medical journals and has co-authored 7 textbook chapters and two books. Dr. Stratigos has held administrative positions in several professional societies, including the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (member of the Board of Directors until 2012, currently Chairman of the Project Proposal Review Committee), the European Association of Dermato-Oncology (Vice-President), the International Dermoscopy Society, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Hellenic Society of Dermatology-Venereology (Treasurer) and the Hellenic Society for Melanoma Research (President-elect). Since 2012, Dr. Stratigos has an appointment as Visiting Scientist at the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine of the Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, USA). During June 2010 until June 2013 he was a member of the National Ethics Committee (Greece).
